Based on the initiative of the IMPEL National Coordinators of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia, on 6 February 2020 a joint meeting of the competent environmental authorities of Croatia and Slovenia was organised in Zagreb in order to improve the inspection of transboundary movements of waste. In addition, other actions regarding the implementation of Regulation (EC) no. 1013/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Shipments of Waste were discussed. During the meeting, examples of good practices by both countries were presented in preventing and processing illegal shipments of waste. The following common steps to combat illegal attempts at cross-border waste management were agreed:
- Intensify the cooperation of the competent authorities of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia in the form of joint inspections of transboundary movements of waste at the State border, as well as on the main transport routes;
- Initiate further efforts on the sharing of all necessary information on a daily basis; and
- Raise the level of knowledge and competence of all involved in the implementation and control of transboundary movements of waste.
Transnational cooperation on environmental law implementation between IMPEL members is one of the key benefits of membership and is highly valued by all involved.
