Hosted by the Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana, FIEP* organised a seminar on the transnational movement of waste, together with its members, IMPEL, the Portuguese Inspection General for Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning (IGAMAOT) and Environment Portuguese Agency (APA). Ms Ana Garcia, vice chair of IMPEL, chaired the seminar.
Main conclusions of the seminar
- Illegal Transnational Movement of Waste is an environmental problem closely connected to high rates of multifaceted corporate/organized crime phenomenon strictly linked with business plots.
- The main drivers are the high profit associated to low costs of uncontrolled dumping or unsafe recycling (and avoiding costs for adequate disposal/treatment).
- The main effects are severe negative impacts on environment, human health, with great prejudice to sustainable development, causing social and economic harm, specially on destination countries. It furthermore leads to loss of raw materials and inefficient use of resources.
