Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) Implementation Project Group meets in Gdansk

July 18, 2019

The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) Implementation Project Group had its first meeting for 2019 in Gdansk, Poland from 5 to 7 June.

Prior to the main Project Group meeting a successful joint inspection exercise was carried out at an oil refinery and a combined heat and power plant in Gdansk. This looked specifically at the wastewater management systems and provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate the inspection checklist that had been developed for industrial wastewater systems.

The meeting was kindly hosted by the Voivodeship Inspectorate of Environmental Protection, Gdansk. The meeting gave an opportunity to take stock of progress with the Project activities and outputs and to agree how priority topics would be taken forward this year.

Sub-groups will work on a range of issues and develop guidance on good practice for regulators involved in implementing the IED. Fact sheets will be produced to contribute to the ‘Doing the Right Things’ guidance tool that is now available on the IMPEL website: www.impel-dtrt.eu

The topics to be taken forward during 2019 are:

  • BAT Conclusions for Intensive Rearing of Poultry and Pigs
  • Joint inspections
  • Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Regulatory Practice
  • Industrial wastewater
  • Horizontal aspects of permitting
  • BAT application
  • Baseline report and groundwater contamination
  • IED and the circular economy
  • Odours
  • Training and capacity-building

A meeting of the sub-group leaders will take place in Kouvola, Finland on 3/4 October and this will be followed by a joint inspection of an intensive pig rearing facility and the IED Implementation Project Workshop on 22 -24 October in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
