To formalise the cooperation between the European Union Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law (IMPEL) and the Themis Network, whose Secretariat is hosted by the Regional Environmental Center (REC), both Networks signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the 14th IMPEL General Assembly, 1-2 December in Luxembourg. The networks share common goals and objectives with regard to environmental protection and sustainable development in Europe and its neighbouring regions. IMPEL and REC are convinced of the importance of contributing to protection of the environment through the effective implementation and enforcement of European environmental law. The agreement arranges for the exchange of information, participation in each other’s activities, meetings and use of tools.
Following the regular and constructive cooperation between the REC and IMPEL throughout past years we are very proud to sign this memorandum of understanding with IMPEL. It represents a step into the future: one in which we will grow stronger and support each other in the shared goal of improving environmental governance in Europe – both inside the EU and its neighboring regions. REC has been especially active with the THEMIS network for managing natural resources and combating environmental crime and it’s therefore a natural partner to IMPEL. We, as REC and Themis Network, hope to benefit from intense mutual advisory support, exchange of information and best practices. By capitalizing on each other’s work we will reach further. We look forward to start the ground work” says Marta Szigeti Bonifert (Executive Director of the REC).
Chris Dijkens (Vice chair of the IMPEL network) states: IMPEL is excited about this collaboration agreement. Cooperating with the Themis network will not only enable the sharing of skills and knowledge amongst each other’s members, but also opens the door to other countries in the region who are not a member of IMPEL. Further it creates wider opportunities to promote IMPEL products and tools.
