IMPEL Onshore Oil and Gas Regulation workshop shares information on regulation for subsurface activities

March 25, 2020

The IMPEL Industry and Air Expert Team’s project team on Onshore Oil and Gas Regulation recently organised and delivered a training in the UK for IMPEL members.

The workshop was designed to discuss onshore oil and gas regulation and lessons learned for other subsurface activities, including geothermal energy, ground source heating and issues of legislation, jurisdiction and expertise around seismicity.

The team attracted delegates from around the EU’s regulatory community to share experiences around this issue to help improve the expertise in the sector. Several delegates from Estonia, Netherlands, Turkey, Natural Resources Wales and SEPA were hosted. The event was organised by East Midlands Groundwater staff working closely with the E&B Oil and Gas Programme and the British Geological Survey. Colleagues from Cumbria & Lancs (Stuart Macdonald), Lincs & Northants (Howard Goulbourn), NPS (Lucy Snape) also presented at the workshop and helped the delegates get the most from a site visit to the Welton Oil and Gas Gathering Centre.

The workshop session was held at the British Geological Survey in Keyworth where the participants enjoyed a visit of the core store at the National Geological Repository.

The discussions and best practice shared at this two day event will feed into a paper that will be published later in 2020.
