In the first half of 2018, IMPEL carried out 2 IMPEL Review Initiatives (IRI’s). The first of these took place in Slovenia, and the second was hosted by the Azores. In both cases, the reviews focussed on permitting activity and inspections of industrial sites. Following the conclusion of these reviews, the meeting hosts reported that the opportunity to engage closely with IMPEL experts on these issues had presented an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas and learn of alternative approaches, many of which they were taking into consideration. The IRI Expert Team also found the IRI meetings extremely helpful in developing their knowledge of the host country, which gave them new insights that they could share when returning to their own organisations.
The IRI ambassadors have also visited Italy in 2018 to discuss the national review scheme that is being developed. It has been inspiring to see how the IRI programme has resulted in new ideas and a willingness to create new systems at the national level, and has demonstrated the continued value of this project. Italy will share more information on their activities at the IMPEL conference in September.
Plans are in place for an IRI in Albania in November. This focus of this will look at ‘green’ issues. If you would like to participate in an IRI, please do not hesitate to contact Michael Nicholson, Simon Bingham or Patricia Weenink, who will be happy to provide you with more information
