Management of Mining Waste project meeting was held on 28-29th November

06 Dec, 2022

Management of Mining Waste Project aims to compare the transposition of the Directive by Member States in order to evaluate common guidelines for better management of extractive waste, also in agreement with the exploratory opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which recommends to Member States to promote initiatives for the exploitation and use of "new fields" of raw materials, such as extractive waste.

Within the scope of this project, a training course was organised from 13 to 15 September in Finland, with two days of classroom lessons and one day of excursion. An overview was provided on the management aspects of extractive waste, from legislation, classification, mining research and extractive strategies, risk assessment and economic aspects. Particular attention was also given to the social aspects of acceptance of mining activities, with reference to the social license to operate.

The Project Team held its final 2022 meeting on November 28-29 in Cagliari, hosted by the University's Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences. The meeting was hybrid with most of the participants on site: the first day was dedicated to the meeting, where experiences from the various partners (including Romania, Poland, Finland, Italy) and interventions by specialists in the field were presented (from the university world and from the technological-professional world). On the second day, the Montevecchio mining site was visited, a short distance from Cagliari.

The final report will be produced and disclosed in the coming months.
