Successful training on Asia – Europe Cooperation Against Waste Crime

17 May, 2021

As part of the WasteForce project, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in partnership with the United Nations University (UNU) SCYCLE programme and with support from WasteForce partners, INTERPOL, held a 3 day on-line training workshop on 24-26 February 2021 on the prosecution of waste crime.

The training gathered more than 120 participants, representatives of prosecution and judicial authorities, customs officials, police, environmental inspectorates, and Ministries from 31 countries in Asia Pacific, Europe, and worldwide, as well as representatives from international organisations: UNEP, UNU-UNITAR, INTERPOL, Secretariat of the Basel Convention, OLAF, Frontex, UNODC, IMPEL and RILO AP.

The online training was structured around a series of presentations by high-level speakers and break-out group discussions based on a developed case study tracking the shipment of waste containers from Europe to Asia. It offered participants a unique opportunity to exchange practices on investigation and prosecution strategies, increase national capacities, and to enhance international operational collaboration with their counterparts at worldwide level.

The WasteForce project contributes to build stronger relationships among key stakeholders in the cross-border waste chain that can continue after the project. In conjunction with the training a networking platform called “Waste Enforcement Asia community” (on Mobilize ) was created, which currently gathers 184 members.

As part of its ongoing work on capacity building by the WasteForce partners, two more online training events will be held in March and April.
