11 May, 2023

Industrial Rearing of Pigs and Poultry Subproject under IMPEL Supporting IED Implementation Project had a project team hybrid meeting on 3rd, and a joint inspection at a sow farm on 4th, of May 2023 in Murcia, Spain.

On the part of IMPEL environmental officers from Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Poland, Belgium and the European Commission joined the meeting. Also officers from Estonia, Austria, Denmark, Albania, Italy and Slovenia participated online in the working group.

The aim was to address the issues of intensive livestock farming from different perspectives. This time Spanish officers from the ministry of Agriculture (MAPA), ministry of Environment (MITERD), Segura basin body authority (CHS), officers from the Murcia Regional government of both departments of livestock and environment, and an officer from ENV C4 also participated.

Environmental compliance implementation of intensive livestock was addressed and contrasted from the perspective of different authorities, particularly those related to the application and compliance with BAT, soil and water pollution due to inappropriate application of manure, ammonia emissions and its deposition and impact on Natura 2000 sites, and odours.

Ongoing negotiations on the IED revision, with special provisions for intensive farms made this meeting very opportune to elaborate and present the views of MS enforcement officials.

A summary video, lessons learned report and a set of proposals to ENV C4 will be the intended output of this working group.
